WASHINGTON, D.C. � U.S. Representative Harold �Hal� Rogers (KY-5) issued the following statement regarding the GAO Report to Congress titled, OxyContin Abuse and Diversion and Efforts to Address the Problem:

 My 18 year old son died 2/19/01 after chewing a Central Nervous System (CNS) depressant and powerful painkiller drug called OXYCONTIN which mixed with other substances that were already in his system. He made a mistake and paid for it with his life. I know he did not realize how DEADLY this drug could be. OxyContin is a POWERFUL PAINKILLER and needed by people in SEVERE chronic Pain who  use it properly under a doctor's supervision BUT this site is about its DEADLY dangers when it is MISUSED.

As I was downstairs and my son lay DEAD in his bed, the police sergeant came in and said "OXY!, kids are dropping dead left and right from this stuff." I yelled out "WHAT? WHY DID I NEVER HEAR OF THIS UNTIL NOW?". I was in shock and angry that I did not know about this rising street epidemic. It's too late for Eddie and me to talk about how dangerous the ABUSE of this drug can be but I want to give other parents the opportunity to warn their kids. I want teens to warn other teens that if you do choose to experiment then absolutely don't do it with OXY. No street drugs are good, but some are MORE dangerous than others and I learned of this one the hardest way in the world.

It's been months since Eddie's death and I have learned a lot and spoken with many people thru my website. Most deaths -- I would estimate 90% -- that OXY was involved in actually were due to POLYPHARMACY (abusing more than one drug including alcohol). Yes, Eddie is one of these cases. Later I found out he abused Xanax earlier in the day. I found out the craze with young people is pill popping/abusing prescription drugs but kids don't know the facts. For example, 5mg of OXY has as much active ingredient (oxycodone) as ONE Percocet, so an 80mg Oxy = 16 Percocets in strength. PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE and lack of quality drug education in the school systems along with teenage logic killed Eddie. This web page is in memory of Eddie but the MESSAGE is bigger than him. OXY ABUSE is on the rise and the ADDICTION to this drug and others is destroying many more lives than the number that have actually DIED. Even though I learned that OXY is not usually the sole cause of death, I still feel it is the STRAW THAT IS BREAKING THE CAMEL'S BACK.

 

2001 sales for Oxycontin were up to 1.5 BILLION...$1,485,970,400 from 1.05 billion in 2000. If legitimate patients are being denied oxycontin then where did a one year 45% increase in sales come from??? Street sales?

Currently oxycontin is approved for moderate-severe pain. The sad truth is too many people are faking moderate pain and selling the pills on the street. After all we would NOT have these oxy related death's if the kids were not able to buy oxy on the street. I believe Oxycontin needs to be re-classified to Cancer and Terminal PAIN ONLY.  I

 

The MOST important message is DO NOT ABUSE ANY PRESCRIPTION DRUGS or ANY DRUGS but, especially, NEVER NEVER mix drugs so maybe one day you'll have a chance to rehab.

In Philadelphia 22 deaths have been linked to Oxycodone in a 3 month period. Oxycodone-related deaths are on the rise across the nation and the deaths in Philadelphia have skyrocketed from from 17 in 1999 to 41 in 2000 and already 40 as of 6/27/01. Basically OXYCONTIN especially when chewed/snorted lowers a persons respiration rate and if enough OXY is taken or if it combines with a HUGE LIST of other medications it can EASILY kill you by lowering your respirations until you eventually stop breathing.

I am writing this to let people know how dangerous this drug is when MISUSED. To the right are excerpts from several news articles, but I would like to sum up my feelings about this pill. Every time you misuse this drug it is like playing RUSSIAN ROULETTE. Eddie lost that night.

What is OXYCONTIN?
OXYCONTIN is one of several OPIUM derivatives (Heroin is also an opium derivative). It is a high potency pain killer that comes in time released tablets that last for 12h hours. As far as pills on the street go, Oxycontin is a HAND GRENADE amongst firecrackers.
Why is it a problem?
According to media reports the drug was over marketed by the maker Purdue Pharma and the pills are easily available on the street. Kids have figured out that if you chew/crush or snort the tablet that you bypass the time release feature and it will give you a high much like HIGH GRADE heroin but with worse consequences. Most kids are actually not aware of the heroin link and do not realize how DANGEROUS this drug is. 5mg of OXY has has as much active ingredient (oxycodone) as One percocet. So chewing/snorting a 80mgOxy is like taking 16 percocets all at once. Again KIDS just don't realize what they are putting into their system from ONE SMALL little pill.
What are the consequences?
Oxycontin suppresses the respiratory system and when combined with alcohol or other depressants  it is often DEADLY. Often the person goes to sleep and their respirations slowly decrease until breathing stops completely.

Can a person LEGALLY prescribed OXYCONTIN become addicted?
Contrary to FALSE CLAIMS THAT LESS THAN 1% of PATIENTS GET ADDICTED,  the CT Attorney General has stated the addiction rate is around 13% but some feel it is as high as 30%. All Patients (100%) do get physically dependent, which means they will suffer physical SEVERE FLU LIKE WITHDRAWALS IF THEY SUDDENLY STOP TAKING IT.
What are symptoms of an overdose?
Slow breathing, seizures, dizziness, weakness, loss of consciousness, coma, confusion, tiredness, COLD and CLAMMY SKIN and SMALL
PUPILS.

How do you kick an OXYCONTIN addiction?
Just like heroin it is almost impossible to do alone as the withdrawal symptoms are worse than heroin and last longer. Professional help from a heroin detox center is the best and safest way to do this. How much will cause an overdose?
Everyone's body is different but as little as half a pill when combined with alcohol or other depressants can lower your respiratory system enough to kill you. Taken in high doses OXYCONTIN alone can kill you.
